Healthy Treats for Your Vizsla: What to Look for and What to Avoid

Dogs are very similar to humans in many ways. Like a person, a dog can have feelings, habits, and even the same tastes.

We must know how to care for our pets so that they are always healthy. Therefore, it is necessary to provide them with the best possible diet since many of the breeds tend to be overweight due to poor nutrition.

Most of the time, people feel the need to eat treats, and that is because they love them. However, that does not mean that they are healthy due to their sugar content and other components. Our Vizslas also feel the need to eat this type of food. Thus, it is necessary that you, as its owner, provide it with a healthy diet so that its health is not affected.

Healthy Treats to Keep in Mind

Feeding our Vizsla dogs with human food can be a bad idea. It is necessary to supply them with specialized dog food since otherwise, it could affect their health. You must know the possible foods that your canine can consume. The best option would be natural treats.

Apples

Apples are one of the ideal natural treats as dogs love them. Regardless of the type of apple, its sweet flavor with a little acid touch makes our Vizslas enjoy it. Feeding our pets with this fruit will help them satisfy their cravings and provide them with enough vitamins A and C to maintain a proper diet and health.

Carrots

Dogs love these vegetables, too. Our Vizsla will have no problem eating them both raw and cooked. Carrots are a good substitute for other treats and provide different nutrients to help prevent some diseases. It also helps strengthen the teeth of our pets.

Best of all, this vegetable is found in most kitchens, so you will have no excuse to feed your Vizsla.

Strawberries

They are one of the tastiest fruits there is. Just like people, dogs also love this fruit due to its incredible and particular sweet taste. It is the perfect substitute for those sugary and unhealthy sweets that can harm your Vizsla health. They provide vitamin C and fiber to increase the immunity of the dog’s body.

However, you should control the portions you give your pet because this fruit contains small pieces of sugar. Therefore, if you feed your Vizsla with this fruit, be sure to provide it with only a few servings.

Blueberries

If you have the opportunity to acquire blueberries, do not hesitate to use them to feed your dog. These fruits are essential to replace any unhealthy treats because they are small and easy to chew. That’s of utmost importance to prevent your dog’s teeth from being damaged by chewing on something hard.

These fruits are sweet and juicy, which provide vitamins (C and K) and phytochemicals. The smell of blueberries will help your dog feel free to eat them.

Bananas

The texture of this fruit gives our Vizsla a pleasant feeling when chewed. Try to feed it with only a small portion as it is a treat. These natural treats have high levels of fiber, potassium, copper, and vitamin C. For this reason, bananas are excellent for our dog’s health since they provide it with more energy and help its heart and digestion.

Watermelons

This fruit is easy to find, making it a cheap and healthy option. Watermelons are sweet, and their beautiful red color will immediately catch the attention of your Vizsla, who will not be able to avoid eating it. Thanks to the high water content that this fruit contains, your dog will be able to urinate regularly, which will allow it to cleanse its organism.

Keep in mind that you must remove the seeds before feeding your dog with this fruit.

What Foods Should You Avoid Giving Your Vizsla?

Many people use to feed their dogs food that humans eat. That includes unhealthy food or treats that can affect the health of our Vizsla. Therefore, it is necessary to know some of the “prohibited” foods that we should avoid giving to our canines.

Chocolate

Without a doubt, chocolate is a food that we humans love. It is also usually quite tasty for canines. However, it is not recommended to feed our Vizsla with chocolate because it contains Theobromine, a stimulant that can be toxic for this type of animal.

If you give your Vizsla large amounts of chocolate, it could cause vomiting, diarrhea, gasping, extreme thirst, hyperactivity (more than usual), and more. That is why it is essential to avoid giving this type of food to our dogs.

Dairy Products

This food group also affects certain lactose-intolerant people. Dairy in dogs is harmful as it could cause intestinal disorders or diarrhea. It is because dogs do not have the enzyme lactase responsible for breaking down lactose; that is, they cannot dissolve sugar. However, puppies can only take milk from their mothers.

Nuts

Some nuts, such as walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, or peanuts, can affect our Vizsla body. Our dogs can really consume these nuts, but we must be careful. Some of them contain Macadamia, oils, and fats that can be toxic or can cause pancreatitis in our animals.

Therefore, if you are thinking of feeding your Vizsla with these foods, be sure to give them only a tiny and dosed portion to avoid causing problems.

Sugars

We have already said this. Even humans can have many health problems when consuming large amounts of sugar. You should avoid giving candy to your Vizsla at all costs. All dogs are prone to obesity or diabetes if we do not provide them with a balanced diet. On certain occasions, excessive sugar consumption can also cause loss of vision in your dog in the future.

Summary

It is vital that you now know which foods you can feed your Vizsla with and which are not. There are still many other treats that you should avoid or take into account, but the ones that we have mentioned above are the most important and will give you an idea of what your pet can really eat.
