Vizslas are a high energy dog breed originally bred for hunting, but now renowned the world over for their loyalty and companionship. These affable, goofy dogs definitely live by the motto “work hard, play hard,” but they add in one more caveat: “sleep hard!”
Many owners have noticed that while their Vizsla will happily romp around the yard for an aggressive play session or pound the street in a hard run, they are just as content to curl up on the couch for some much-needed shut-eye after exerting all that energy.
So, how much sleep does a Vizsla need? The amount will vary from dog to dog, but many owners have noted that their dog sleeps through the night and can spend between four and six hours a day napping.
Of course, exercise is absolutely essential, especially given the breed’s history of being a hunting and sport dog. But you already knew that, of course. In fact, you’re probably just getting back from a walk and hanging up the leash as you’re reading this article!
Adult Vizslas need 45 to 60 minutes of daily vigorous activity, and puppies need upwards of two hours. As long as this minimum is being met, you don’t need to sweat it if your Vizsla likes to spend a good chunk of time lounging around the house and being your “shadow.”
At night, expect that your dog will happily snuggle up with you under the covers. Vizslas have an incredibly strong pack instinct and crave being near their owner. There’s a pretty humorous YouTube video of a Vizsla, still buried under a mountain of covers, begrudgingly opening his eyes when the alarm clock rings.
He eventually starts howling until his owner laughingly turns off the alarm and the dog rolls over and promptly falls back asleep. I guess that’s how we all feel about Mondays, huh?
As you can see, sleep is definitely sacred to this rambunctious dog breed. After all, they need time to recharge after their exhausting walks, runs, and play sessions. Your dog’s mood and weight are good indicators of the quality of their sleep and exercise. If your dog is amiable, happy, affectionate, and a healthy weight, they’re likely getting sufficient amounts of sleep and exercise.
So take a cue from your favorite shadow when you consider laying down for that afternoon nap. You were on the other end of the rope during that vigorous tug-of-war session earlier!
