Many people believe that the Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer and Hungarian Wirehaired Pointer are the same, but The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) considers them two different breeds today. 

Wirehaired Vizsla: Physical Characteristics 

It presents similar physical characteristics to the Shorthaired Vizsla. This breed has an elegant, slim, robust, and shapely body. It has a muzzle that is usually shorter than the total length of its head. The skull of this canine is moderately wide and domed. The Wirehaired Vizsla also has a deep and wide chest. 

This beautiful dog’s eyes are oval and of medium size with a brown or amber color. It has thin, floppy ears and a medium-long neck which is well proportioned to its body.

This canine’s coat is strong, dense, wired, and dull considering that it has an undercoat that is thick and repels water. The color of a Wirehaired Vizsla puppy’s fur is usually golden yellow when it is young, with the particularity that its ears have darker tones. 

The size and weight of a Wirehaired Vizsla puppy will depend on its age, gender, and development. However, when these canines grow, they acquire the dimensions of a large-medium dog.

Male Wirehaired Vizsla can measure between 58 cm and 64 cm while females between 54 cm and 60 cm. The weight of a male of this breed is between 22 kg and 30 kg while that of a female is between 18 kg and 25 kg. 

Wirehaired Vizsla: Personality and Behavior 

The Wirehaired Vizsla is characterized by being a very active and energetic breed with a high physical activity level. These canines require exercise every day to stay fit and healthy. Generally, adult Wirehaired Vizsla requires two daily exercise sessions for a total of one hour of exercise. On the other hand, Wirehaired Vizsla puppies need two hours of training or more daily. 

Why is that? Puppies are not fully developed yet, so they require a greater amount of exercise than adult Wirehaired Vizsla.

The idea is that you alternate these types of physical activities every day so that your puppy does not get bored. 

Wirehaired Vizsla: Feeding 

As with physical activity, a Wirehaired Vizsla puppy requires more food than an adult Wirehaired Vizsla. That is due to the same reason that we mentioned in the previous point. 

Wirehaired Vizsla puppies require two-hour daily exercise routines compared to adult ones, which only need one hour. It means greater energy expenditure in your puppy’s small body, so it must be compensated with food.

It is important that you know that your Wirehaired Vizsla diet must be based on natural and healthy foods that provide the necessary nutrients and vitamins to your pet’s body. 

Many people do not know the proper foods that we should give these animals, and that is why a large percentage of dogs of this breed suffer from health problems all over the world. The most advisable thing is to use healthy foods that provide the necessary proteins for our puppy. Some of them are: 

• Meats (chicken, turkey, pork, lamb, veal, fish). 
• Vegetables. 
• Fruits. 
• Eggs. 

Make sure not to overfeed your puppy to avoid any health problems, especially obesity, which is usually the disorder that most affects any breed of dog and one of the causes of death. 

Wirehaired Vizsla: Training 

The best time to train a dog is when it is a puppy, as they tend to have a higher level of understanding. We know that the Wirehaired Vizsla is an intelligent breed of dog that loves to train and satisfy its masters. They are canines that learn anything from mental to physical training. 

Pick a few days to spend time training your puppy. You need to provide it with physical and mental stimulation exercises, which will help it to develop better and acquire more skills.

Wirehaired Vizsla: Care and Grooming 

Unlike a Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer, this one has a thicker coat that needs further grooming. Generally, this canine requires its fur to be brushed a few times a week.

However, an extra session may be necessary depending on the physical activities it did. It is important to note that you should only bathe dogs of this type when essential since they do not usually get very dirty. 

Pay close attention to your dog’s ears as they tend to get dirty frequently, and if they are not taken care of, they can cause health problems in the future. Generally, dogs do not like to be bathed, much less, that we use a dryer to dry their coat when it is wet.
